There seems to be a dilemma for early Miss Universe heavy-weights as they find themselves struggling in a brave new world. Countries that have been considered strong competitors way way back seem to have lost the magic formula. And now they are pondering on whether to embrace the future or hold on to the past. European countries which are the original powerhouses have lost their lustre for a while and we’ve seen the rise of a strong India and Venezuela as the countries to beat.
As an observation, it is safe to say that capturing the Miss Universe crown is one of the most challenging goals for anyone, be it an organization or individual who represents them (well maybe not for Venezuela anyway). Just to secure a spot on the most coveted Miss Universe Top 15, a delegate must have a unique combination of unmatched beauty, loads of charm, a good thinking mind and tons of good luck. Once the delegate has passed this round, it is then up to destiny to determine how long will her journey be.
The Miss Universe 2010 pageant looks like a promising one for everybody. Though Venezuela (Marelisa) is still a force to reckon with, India seems to have been a little bit suppressed. USA, the country with the most Miss Universe crowns has a very strong representative (Rimah) but there are others on the same league as her. Europe rocks this year as there are a good number of really remarkable delegates from that side of the world. Three years ago, Asian domination happened when Riyo Mori of Japan won with Miss Korea as one of the five finalists. This year, there is a high chance that Asia will shine again. However, candidates from Latin America and the Caribbean together with some from Africa have also a lot to offer that one of them can pull off a surprise. In short, it appears that everyone plays on a well-levelled playing field.
After the Preliminary round, online polls, fan sites, hate boards and other online media run amok with their predictions of who’s who are the members of the Miss Universe 2010 Magic 15. Members of the highly regarded Indonesian annihilators say it is Qory and definitely it’s Fonthip according to the royal crusaders of Miss Thailand. Filipinos as one of the fiercest battle observers confidently proclaimed it is no other than Venus Raj while praying the novena on the side. Jesinta’s supporters (Australia) jump like kangaroos while Ria’s (New Zealand) groups are as adorable as Kiwis. Other candidates from Asia and the Pacific glimmer with hope knowing full well that the road to the top is widely open. Latin Americans are laughing out loud as they feel good about the chances of their hermosas, bonitas and magnificas Ximena (Mexico), Mariana (Puerto Rico), Anyoli (Panama), Deborah (Brazil) and Yesica (Argentina). On the other side of the planet, Irina (Russia), Rozanna (Ireland), Malika (France), Angela (Albania) and the Europeans are silently watching, ready to strike when no one least expect it and give them a run for their money. While in the darkness, Hellen (Tanzania), Nicole (South Africa) and the Africans are preparing the most toxic concoction as they wait for the right moment and go for the kill.
Alas, predicting who will join the top 15 delegates is without a doubt one of the most frustrating and futile activity there is. Each year, the Miss Universe Organization is in search of an ambassador whose qualities are unique and has a lot to put on the table in spreading the cause, the goodwill and all the things it stands for. In the end, whoever holds the most potential in fulfilling these goals will walk out victorious.
